Hacketts Hollow is the name of the large hollow on the Valkenburglaan/Sportlaan still visible today.
September 20, 1944, Brigadier J.W. Hackett, commander of the 4th Parachute Infantry Brigade, landed with 2500 men on the Ginkel Heath.
The remaining 150 men of the 156 Parachute Regiment were already pinned down for 8 hours in this hollow. An overwhelming German majority, including flamethrower tanks, tried to surround their position. He made the heroic decision to fight his way to the edge of the western perimeter with a bayonet charge.
The official opening of the camp starts at the memorial of Hacketts Hollow.
